4 Basic Temper Groupings For Aluminum Products:

"F" - as fabricated
Shaped by cold working, hot working or casting processes in which no special control over thermal processes or strain hardening is employed.

"O" - Dead soft (i.e. fully annealed)
Applies to wrought products that are annealed to obtain the lowest strength temper and to cast products that are annealed to improve ductility and dimensional stability. A digit other than zero may follow the O.

"T" - Heat treated (i.e. for age hardening alloys)
Applies to products that are thermally treatable (2000, 6000 and 7000 series), with or without supplementary strain hardening, to produce stable tempers. One or more digits always follow the T.

"H" - Strain hardened (i.e. for non age hardening alloys, wrought products only)
This temper applies to products that have their strength increased by strain hardening, with or without supplementary thermal treatment to produce some reduction in strength. Two or more digits always follow the H:

The first digit following the H indicates the specific combination of basic operations and is comprised between 1 and 4:

The second digit following the H indicates the degree of strain hardening (or cold work) as identified by the minimum value of the ultimate tensile strength and is comprised 1 and 9. The minimum tensile strength of tempers Hx8 is calculated from a table and is based on the minimum tensile strength of the alloy in the annealed temper.

 

 

Temper O

Annealed.

Full Tempers:

O

Annealed - products achieving the required annealed properties after hot forming processes may be designated as O temper.

O1

Thermally treated at approximately the same time and temperature required for solution treatment and slow cooled to room temperature.

O2

Thermo mechanically processed to enhance formability, such as required for super-plastic forming (SFP).

O3

Homogenized.

 

Temper T1

Cooled from elevated temperature shaping process and naturally aged.

Cooled from elevated temperature shaping process and naturally aged.

T1X

Cooled from elevated temperature shaping process and naturally aged. When a second digit is present it is material dependent and has no general interpretation.

 

Temper T3

Solution heat-treated, cold worked and naturally aged.

Solution heat-treated, cold worked and naturally aged.

T31

Solution heat-treated, cold worked to approximately 1%.

T351

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1.5 to 3% for sheet and plate, 1 to 3% for rolled or cold finished rod and bar, 1 to 5% for hand or ring forging and rolled ring) and naturally aged. The products receive no further straightening after stretching.

T3510

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1 to 3% for extruded rod, bar, shapes and tube, 0.5 to 3% for drawn tube) and naturally aged. The products receive no further straightening after stretching.

T3511

Same as T3510 except that minor straightening is allowed after stretching to comply with standard tolerances.

T352

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by compressing to produce a permanent set of 1 to 5% and naturally aged.

 

Temper T4

Solution heat-treated and naturally aged.

Full Tempers:

T4

Solution heat-treated and naturally aged.

T42

Solution heat treated from the O or the F temper to demonstrate response to heat treatment, and naturally aged to a substantially stable condition.

T4X

Solution heat-treated and naturally aged. When a second digit is present it is material dependent and has no general interpretation except for T42.

 

Temper T5

Cooled from elevated temperature shaping process and artificially aged.

T5X

The products receive no further straightening after stretching.

T6510

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1 to 3% for extruded rod, bar, shapes and tube, 0.5 to 3% for drawn tube) and then artificially aged. The products receive no further straightening after stretching.

T6511

Same as T6510 except that minor straightening is allowed after stretching to comply with standard tolerances.

T652

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by compressing to produce a permanent set of 1 to 5% and then artificially aged.

T654

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by restricting cold in the finish die and then artificially aged.

T66

Solution heat-treated and then artificially aged - mechanical property level higher than T6 achieved through special control of the process (6000 series alloys).

 

Temper T7

Solution heat-treated and stabilized.

Solution heat treated and then artificially over aged in order to achieve the best stress corrosion resistance.

T732

Solution heat treated and then artificially over aged in order to achieve the best stress corrosion resistance. Applies to test material heat-treated from annealed or F temper or to products heat treated from any temper by the user.

T7351

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1.5 to 3% for sheet and plate, 1 to 3% for rolled or cold finished rod and bar, 1 to 5% for hand or ring forging and rolled ring) and then artificially aged in order to achieve the best stress corrosion resistance. The products receive no further straightening after stretching.

T73510

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1 to 3% for extruded rod, bar, shapes and tube, 0.5 to 3% for drawn tube) and then artificially aged in order to receive the best stress corrosion resistance. Same as T73510 except that minor straightening is allowed after stretching to comply with standard tolerances.

T7352

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by compressing to produce a permanent set of 1 to 5% and then artificially aged to achieve the best stress corrosion resistance.

T7354

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by restricting cold in the finish die and then artificially aged in order to achieve the best stress corrosion resistance.

T74

Solution heat treated and then artificially over aged (between T73 and T76).

T7451

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1.5 to 3% for sheet and plate, 1 to 3% for rolled or cold finished rod and bar, 1 to 5% for hand or ring forging and rolled ring) and then artificially over aged (between T73 and T76). The products receive no further strengthening after stretching.

T74510

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1 to 3% for extruded rod, bar, shapes and tube, 0.5 to 3% for drawn tube) and then artificially over aged (between T73 and T76). The products receive no further strengthening after stretching.

T74511

Same as T74510 except that minor straightening is allowed after stretching to comply with standard tolerances.

T7452

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by compressing to produce a permanent set of 1 to 5% and then artificially over aged (between T73 and T76).

T7454

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by restricting cold in the finish die and then artificially over aged (between T73 and T76).

T76

Solution heat treated and then artificially over aged in order to achieve a good exfoliation corrosion resistance.

T761

Solution heat treated and then artificially over aged in order to achieve a good exfoliation corrosion resistance (applies to 7475 sheet and strip).

T762

Solution heat treated and then artificially over aged in order to achieve a good exfoliation corrosion resistance. Applies to test material heat-treated from annealed or F temper or to products heat treated from any temper by the user.

T7651

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1.5 to 3% for sheet and plate, 1 to 3% for rolled or cold finished rod and bar, 1 to 5% for hand or ring forging and rolled ring) and then artificially over aged in order to achieve a good exfoliation corrosion resistance. The products receive no further straightening after stretching.

T76510

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1 to 3% for extruded rod, bar, shapes and tube, 0.5 to 3% for drawn tube) and then artificially over aged in order to achieve a good exfoliation corrosion resistance. The products receive no further straightening after stretching.

T76511

Same as T76510 except that minor straightening is allowed after stretching to comply with standard tolerances.

T7652

Solution heat treated, stress relieved by compressing to produce a permanent set of 1 to 5% and then artificially over aged in order to achieve a good exfoliation corrosion resistance.

T7654

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by restricting cold in the finish die and then artificially over aged in order to achieve a good exfoliation corrosion resistance.

T79

Solution heat treated and then artificially over aged (very limited over ageing).

T79510

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1 to 3% for extruded rod, bar, shapes and tube, 0.5 to 3% for drawn tube) and then artificially over aged (very limited over ageing). The products receive no further straightening after stretching.

T79511

Same as T79510 except that minor straightening is allowed after stretching to comply with standard tolerances.

 

Temper T8

Solution heat-treated, cold worked and artificially aged.

T841

Solution heat-treated, cold worked and then artificially under aged (sheet and strip in alloys 2091 and 8090).

T84151

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching with a permanent set of 1.5 to 3% and then artificially under aged (plate in alloys 2091 and 8090).

T851

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1.5 to 3% for sheet and plate, 1 to 3% for rolled or cold finished rod and bar, 1 to 5% for hand or ring forging and rolled ring) and then artificially aged. The products receive no further straightening after stretching.

T8510

Solution heat-treated, stress relieved by stretching a controlled amount (permanent set 1 to 3% for extruded rod, bar, shapes and tube, 0.5 to 3% for drawn tube) and then artificially aged. The products receive no further straightening after stretching.
